 Donor Spotlight: Scotiabank

Holland Bloorview’s Change for Kids 2016 gave companies, schools and families the chance to learn about and celebrate the spirit and determination of kids with disabilities who are crushing barriers that stand in their way.

Told through compelling stories and inspiring videos, Change for Kids ran from January 25 – March 4, 2016, supporting Holland Bloorview’s highest priority needs such as advancing research in autism and concussion. That’s in addition to helping families through specialized camps, recreation programs, resources and support channels.

Fuelled by strong media coverage, as well as tweets from local celebrities like Mayor John Tory, and CBC personality George Stroumboulopoulos, the campaign generated both buzz and awareness about how kids with disabilities are doing the things they love, thanks to Holland Bloorview.

Knowing first-hand the impact childhood disability can have on an entire family, Scotiabank Branch Manager Susan MacDonald is especially proud that as a Change for Kids sponsor, Scotiabank helped make this initiative possible.

For Susan, whose son experienced serious health issues at a young age that eventually led to a heart transplant, Holland Bloorview’s work hits a personal note. “I also know several families with kids who are clients at Holland Bloorview,” she added.

“It can be such a struggle,” continued Susan, “working and providing for families while coping with the challenges of raising a child with a disability, or in some cases more than one child. I know the toll it can take, that’s why this is important to me on so many levels.”

“I also know that financial support is crucial in helping Holland Bloorview families get the specialized care, support and resources they need, as well as for childhood disability research to continue.”

In addition to Change for Kids, Scotiabank also generously supports Holland Bloorview’s Concussion Centre, to help raise awareness about the importance of research into pediatric concussion prevention and treatments.

Though Change for Kids has wrapped up, Susan remains very connected to Holland Bloorview. Her Eglinton and Laird Branch handles all Holland Bloorview donations and transactions – another fact that gives her great pride.
